Why Teach? Introductory Post

                                            Why Teach?

Why teach is a simple, yet complex question. Growing up I had so much fun going to school and learning new things each day. I had an exceptionally outgoing and engaging teacher in second grade who sparked a passion for learning inside of me. Throughout the rest of my education journey, no other teacher I had compared to her or her compassion for her work and students.

My goals as a future teacher consist of teaching elementary level kids and to inspire them and set them up for a memorable and successful educational journey. I want children to be excited and eager to learn again. Unfortunately, for some students school isn't just a place to learn, for them school is a place to get away from a bad home life. As an educator, I also want to be able to create a happy place for my students and build up their self esteem to know that they achieve anything they put their mind to!

A few TikTok teachers that stood out to me where @the_mrskelly, @lovemsslater, and @chemteacherphil. Two of these teachers joined the TikTok community on a whim during the pandemic, which allowed them to stay in touch with their students and still educate them with short and simple videos! @chemteacherphil, was encouraged to post his first video by one of his students and then grew fond of the creative video making. In one of his videos he compared cotton candy fibers to human capillaries, then using the fibers in the cotton candy to create synthetic tissue for humans! I think TikTok is a great way for teachers and educators to reach many different audiences with their passions.

Marginalized Students in Public Schools

Marginalized Students in Public Schools       When discussing the topic of marginalized students, we mean students who are defined by their race, gender, geographical location, etc. (Module 2 Introduction) These students are placed in the margins or the outside of the “normal” social and educational hierarchy. Often, we find students of the same gender, race, geographical location, etc. being friends with one another instead of intertwining with the other students that may be different than them. Whether it be a fear of judgment or just different values or hobbies, these students may not cross paths even though they attend the same public school and receive the same education. Students who are pushed into the margins, are not looking to be treated differently than the students who are the social norm, they just want to be treated equally. As humans and future educ...

What lengths am I willing to go to in order to do right by every child?

What Lengths Am I Willing To Go To In Order To Do Right By Every Child? In order to do right by every child, teachers must educate themselves of different cultures and values and be able to step out of their comfort zone to make sure they are correct with their teaching and how they act in the classroom to make students of different cultures and background comfortable in the classroom. As an educator it is important to take time to consider students identities and be able to create a culturally responsive classroom environment. Equity in the classroom is important to ensure everyone gets equal opportunities whatever the circumstances are for each student. Creating a sense of diversity In the classroom is very important as well so that the students can learn about their peers and their cultures along with sharing their own. This is something the teacher would have to take upon themselves to promote within their classroom and have a passion for their students o...
How Does Gender Affect The Teaching Profession?      Today as we walk through halls of schools K-12th grade, we typically see female educators. Women have historically been known to fill the role of an educator, but now, there has been an increase in male educators within schools. More middle school to high school level, you will see male teachers, yet in all levels of education it is not rare to see a male hold an assistant principal or principal position, even most school board positions are filled by men. At times, men being in higher positions than women in the eduction system can affect the way the educators interact with the students and how the materials are taught. I believe if the typical roles were switched, where there were more women in higher valued positions, the teachers would be taug...
