Stories: Who's are told and whose remain in the margins?
Throughout school we are taught significant people in history, but what we don't think about is who was actually significant but we have never heard of them? What makes these specific people so significant that we learn about them or their time period and not this group of ethnicity and their time period? Marginalized individuals are not just in history either. Look around in your classroom and even in your workplace or on your favorite TV show, there are individuals who are portrayed as less than because they may not be as smart as the person next to them or because they are scared to speak up for themselves. People get treated differently or like they hold less value because they are in the 'margins'. Who gets to decide who is insignificant or lesser than? Whether it be in history or in every day life, everyone has a purpose and a story. The thought of what if an important person in history gets overlooked just because they did not keep a journal of their adventures or thoughts is another way to sit back and wonder whose stories don't get told.To wrap up these thoughts, is it society that labels the margins or is it not a label, but people in society trying to beat one another and turn everything into a competition of who is better? I believe if everyone gets a fair chance at life and no one is labeled or out done by others, our history classes would be different, even our TV shows and day to day lives.
