What is the purpose of school?

What is the purpose of school?

The purpose of school is to provide an education for all students to help them succeed in their life. School allows children to reach their full creative potential and blossom into the person they are meant to be. Students and families trust in the school systems to prepare their children for the real world and teach them the skills they need to be a successful member of society. The purpose of school is to teach children basic academic skills to navigate and form an understanding of math, English, science and history. Unfortunately, there are times where students that need specific accommodations to learn are pushed to the side and fall back in work. I believe that the schools try their best to separate them from the "regular" students to help assist them, but in my opinion, I feel they should never be separated. Separation from peers at a young age can cause a major indifference within the students which leads to them being treated differently as a person, when the situation is just as small as they don't learn at the same pace which is super common in the education system. As long as students are separated in the classroom, they will be viewed differently by their peers, and school is a place to learn acceptance and make friends of all walks of life, but by separating the students it is going against these teachings. Students who need special accommodations from schools need to be interacting with their peers while having the extra help given to them to promote a healthy and incorporative learning environment.

  1. Well put, Jacy. The fundamentals of the public school system aim to prepare and teach students how to become contributing members of society, but I agree that accommodations and modifications for students that have (learning) disabilities can lack in certain areas. It is super important to keep a child's day-to-day schedule at school the most "normal" and social as possible. Students often thrive on each other's interest or participation in a subject. Young students also are very capable of helping their peers better understand concepts and information. Allowing students that have disabilities to participate in class activities can benefit every kind of student in multiple aspects, even outside of academics. Providing a healthy, safe, and comfortable environment for students is of the utmost importance and it makes me really glad that our peers/future teachers all find this to be essential in a public school setting.

Marginalized Students in Public Schools

Marginalized Students in Public Schools       When discussing the topic of marginalized students, we mean students who are defined by their race, gender, geographical location, etc. (Module 2 Introduction) These students are placed in the margins or the outside of the “normal” social and educational hierarchy. Often, we find students of the same gender, race, geographical location, etc. being friends with one another instead of intertwining with the other students that may be different than them. Whether it be a fear of judgment or just different values or hobbies, these students may not cross paths even though they attend the same public school and receive the same education. Students who are pushed into the margins, are not looking to be treated differently than the students who are the social norm, they just want to be treated equally. As humans and future educ...

What lengths am I willing to go to in order to do right by every child?

What Lengths Am I Willing To Go To In Order To Do Right By Every Child? In order to do right by every child, teachers must educate themselves of different cultures and values and be able to step out of their comfort zone to make sure they are correct with their teaching and how they act in the classroom to make students of different cultures and background comfortable in the classroom. As an educator it is important to take time to consider students identities and be able to create a culturally responsive classroom environment. Equity in the classroom is important to ensure everyone gets equal opportunities whatever the circumstances are for each student. Creating a sense of diversity In the classroom is very important as well so that the students can learn about their peers and their cultures along with sharing their own. This is something the teacher would have to take upon themselves to promote within their classroom and have a passion for their students o...
How Does Gender Affect The Teaching Profession?      Today as we walk through halls of schools K-12th grade, we typically see female educators. Women have historically been known to fill the role of an educator, but now, there has been an increase in male educators within schools. More middle school to high school level, you will see male teachers, yet in all levels of education it is not rare to see a male hold an assistant principal or principal position, even most school board positions are filled by men. At times, men being in higher positions than women in the eduction system can affect the way the educators interact with the students and how the materials are taught. I believe if the typical roles were switched, where there were more women in higher valued positions, the teachers would be taug...
